Zillow claims that one of their primary missions is to do what is in the best interest of the consumer. Very noble indeed but hey have yet to clarify if this consumer is just buyer-consumers, or if this includes seller-consumers as well, because let's face it, excluding the rights of one group may be discrimination.
Zillow recently claimed that Compass and MLS MRED formed a partnership in 2026 to expand MRED's private listing network nationwide, with MRED demanding that Zillow display Compass's "private" or "hidden" listings, even outside of MRED's traditional service area. Zillow alleges that MRED, along with its feed provider MLS Grid, threatened to cut off Zillow’s access to all Chicagoland listing data if Zillow did not comply and display these private, off-market listings. Surely displaying all of these listings would be perceived to afford consumers the ability to see all these listings? Isn't that the mission of Zillow? Why would they be so opposed to something that compels them to do what their primary mission in life is, to serve the consumer best?
Double standard? Zillow's own "Listing Access Standards" refuses to display properties on its platform if they were previously hidden from the public via Private Listing Networks (competition)? Zillow maintains this policy promotes transparency but of course Zillow has now developed its own private listings tool, partnering with some major brokerages (Keller Williams, RE/MAX, and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices) for its "Zillow Preview" tool to showcase and pre-market listings. Zillow justifies banning private ("pocket") listings while launching Zillow Preview by arguing that private networks limit competition and seller profits, whereas Zillow Preview offers "pre-market" exposure to all buyers. The strategy aims to end "hidden" listings while creating a compliant, public "coming soon" platform to boost listing views yet simultaneously they want to ban any listings that were not displayed on their site listed pre-market.
