Solar, geothermal, and wind energy were sold to the planet as a form of a Green initiative to save the planet, but more recently, those with green energy systems are seeing the other green, monetary savings and real energy independence, not the kind we are witnessing right now, whereby energy costs are tied to Global market pricing.

While the cost benefits of a solar system can take years to pay for themselves, this is accelerating as energy demand and costs keep rising. Solar Power Europe found that solar energy has saved the continent more than €100 million per day since March 1st by lowering demand for imported gas. This means Europe saved €3 billion last month alone. Commonly found in areas like balconies, terraces and shed roofs, plug-in solar uses small panels that can be attached to an external wall. In many European countries, these can be purchased from the supermarket or online. The power generated from plug-in solar can be used directly through a mains socket like any other device (such as a mobile phone charger) without any installation costs. Sadly, most of these installations are rather hideous, revealing an enormous opportunity for some good design.

I have multiple outdoor lights in my garden that are solar-powered.  In 2026, the average U.S. homeowner with solar panels is expected to save between $1,000 and $2,000+ per year on electricity bills, or approximately $80 to $150+ per month. Over a 25-year lifespan, total savings can reach $30,000 to over $100,000, depending on utility rates and location.  In 2026, a full battery power storage system (10–13.5 kWh) for a 2,000 sq ft home typically costs between $10,000 and $16,000 fully installed, about the same as a generator.

I suspect many commercial building owners, who are almost entirely focused on ROI, are installing 'green' energy to save dollars.
