These days one might feel inclined to escape the anxieties, tensions and stress that seem to be growing in our society coming from all sides and head off to a place far, far away from it all. In doing so one should be extremely aware of one issue that emerged in the latest tax bill just passed by the Senate: access to healthcare.
If health is our greatest wealth, having easy, fast access to solid healthcare may possibly be the most important consideration when determining where you live. Rural healthcare in the US is facing significant challenges, and in some areas it is fading. Between 2005 and 2023, 146 hospitals in rural counties closed or stopped providing inpatient services. Many more rural hospitals are at risk of closing due to financial difficulties. There are fewer healthcare professionals, including primary care physicians and specialists, in rural areas compared to urban areas. In 2022, there were nearly 3 times as many physicians per 100,000 population in urban areas than in rural areas.
Rural residents often live far from healthcare facilities and if they lack access to reliable transportation, accessing care, especially emergency services, becomes even more challenging. Many rural residents face higher poverty rates, making it difficult to afford health insurance or pay for healthcare services. These days there are much more efficient remote health services, but that does not help you if you have a stroke where immediate care matters.
Many people decry the high and rising costs of living in a bigger urban area. Part of that cost is the ability to access quality healthcare, fast. This is especially important for older buyers who are more susceptible to regular healthcare needs. Some who boast low cost housing options often fail to mention just how far away those places can be from good healthcare. While they may not be in rural areas, they can also be far, far away. While time is the last luxury, health is your greatest wealth.
