Function, Not Friendship

There are many people on this planet who do and say some bad things. We are all flawed and are prone to making mistakes, either willingly, by choice, or otherwise. It's important to call out bad behaviors.

Over my years in real estate, I have witnessed some bad behaviors. However, some bad players are also often very good at other things they do, have great ideas, etc. I choose to extrapolate the good, and yes, even sometimes some real pearls of wisdom appear. Often, bad players are quite brilliant in some areas that can add tremendous value to us, and society at large.

Many people these days suggest the best thing to do with these bad apples is to ignore them 100%, cancel them out of your mind and life. It's not that easy. Often, ironically, the worst players get the most attention and headlines as their words and actions drive the most headlines and attention. We don't have to be best friends with these people or like them. Instead, we can focus on function, not friendship, and disengage emotionally.

I believe that within every person lies good at varying degrees. I believe everyone has a good idea or two. There is no excuse for bad behavior but there is almost always an explanation. Conversely, most bad players possess strengths that we can learn and benefit from. Seek this out to negate the impact the bad may have on you.
