This is how I would describe the mood of many in business right now. There are a multitude of factors that are delivering comfort, caution, concern, close watch, hard work, creative thinking and planning, etc. While the only certainty in life is change, knowing change is never comfortable, this is a moment for all of us to find comfort during uncomfortable times.
Will mortgage rates go up, down or stay the same and when? Will job losses impact the ability of buyers to step in and buy? Could the extreme political divisions right now lead to another opposite extreme emerge fueled by frustration and anger? Will there be social unrest? Are equity prices over-valued? Will our rising national debt lead to a major correction? Will our country's increased spending be offset by GDP growth or will that stagnate? Will inflation remain elevated or rise more? Will we have enough power for a growing population and the electricity demands of high tech? Will part of the world unite against the US to retaliate on tariffs? Will consumer affordability be further strained by tariff costs passed on to them or higher costs of locally made goods? Will building cost more?
So many uncomfortable questions. I could go on with a much, much longer list, but before you get deeply depressed, remember the following: when people are COMFORTABLE, they become arrogant, less cautious, less creative, less conservative with their money, take bigger risks, put on blinders to realities and facts, etc, etc. So maybe in all of this we can find comfort that a little fear and discomfort may help us navigate through these times (and they are mere moments in a lifetime), to reach a better place. Damage can be undone with time. We can become wiser and better.
And yes, when, not if, that better place arrives, I am certain it will present itself with new discomforts. So seek comfort in the ride, whatever that might take.
