Age-Bias v's Experience

Demi Moore's stunning performance as an aging actress/aerobics/fitness guru in THE SUBSTANCE highlights the intense pressures many face as they age in professions that are more youth-oriented. Being on camera is extremely demanding.

Aging in most careers can be tough in our youth obsessed world. Wall Street is notorious for putting their aging workforce out to pasture as they reach their 50's. Real estate brokerage may be the exception in a host of professions that frown on age. This is changing too as looks and youth are center stage in the increasingly media and image driven environment of brokerage and real estate advisory.

I've met those in their 70's with significantly more energy and creativity than some in their 20's. What is 70 today is eerily similar to what was 50 a few years ago. When it comes to most things, averages are pretty useless and the same applies to age.

As I age I'm much more realistic about who might want to work with me: being relatable is critically important in an advisory role. When markets roar, youth is always attractive, but when things get tougher, some grey hair and a few wrinkles can inject value perception. Yes, substantive experience has value, especially when enormous amounts of money are at play.

I am also not deluded:  I can't run as fast as I used to. Nothing is more satisfying about the aging process than having the wisdom to observe, pause and wait for outcomes that you've witnessed before to know the ending of the movie. My grey hair and wrinkles have evolved in tandem with my career and are a badge of honor, highlighting that I've been battle tested, I'm full of market knowledge, experience and have multiple success stories for more clients than I can remember. Here's to the next 20 years of grey hair and wrinkles.
